• All things are essentially empty—not born, not destroyed; not stained, not pure; without loss, without gain.

    —Heart Sutra

  • This way and that way, I tried to keep the pail together, hoping the weak bamboo would never break. Suddenly the bottom fell out. No more water, no more moon in the water. Emptiness in my hand.

    —Nun Chiyano

  • The ordinary mind is the way.

    —Nansen

  • Special transmission outside the scriptures—not relying on words; pointing directly to the mind; realizing mind and becoming Buddha.

Weekly Sitting

Monthly Zazenkai

The first weekend of every month.

Our aim is to follow the original path of our Zen ancestors, through the practice of Zen Meditation (Zazen, 坐禅 ), to attain the enlightenment of Shakyamuni Buddha. The initial enlightenment experience, called kensho (seeing your self-nature, 見性 ), occurs when you realize your self-nature through a direct experience. We follow this with continuous Zen practice through Shikantaza or koan study, to deepen and clarify this experience, until all traces of self and even enlightenment are washed away. Thus, returning oneself to an ordinary person.

Crystal Cloud Zendo is affiliated to the Sanbo Zen Lineage and students practice under the guidance of qualified teachers from the lineage. This school of Zen combines the practices of the two main Zen sects i.e. Soto and Rinzai. Thus, we practice both shikantaza (just sitting, 只管打坐) as well as Koan (公案)study. Besides zazen, guidance includes dokusans (personal interviews, 獨參) and teishos (Dharma Talks, 提唱) conducted by the resident teachers. We hold regular Monday weekly group sittings, zazenkais (Day long sittings) and sesshins (Meditation Retreats).

Everyone, irrespective or race or religion, is qualified to find out their own self-nature as it is neither dependent on nor attached to any of these. We welcome all sincere seekers, regardless of race or religion, who are willing to practice diligently to attain their self-realization.

The Zen Society was registered with the Registry of Societies, Singapore in 1984 and the members practice in Crystal Cloud Zendo.
